Graded against the official YKI rubric.

Every task is scored on the same six dimensions YKI examiners use — grammar, vocabulary, task completion, communication, pronunciation, and fluency — and calibrated to your level, so you know exactly where you stand before exam day.

Sano practices against the publicly documented YKI rubric (oph.fi). It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Finnish National Agency for Education and does not administer the official exam.

Why I built Sano

I built the YKI speaking practice I couldn’t find.

When I set out to speak Finnish, I hit the wall you probably know too: reading and writing slowly came, but speaking — the part YKI actually tests — had nowhere to practice. Tandem partners were hit-or-miss, tutors were expensive and scheduled, and the apps drilled vocabulary, not conversation. I believe everyone working toward YKI deserves to practice speaking on their own terms — at midnight before the exam, without booking anyone. So I built Sano: an AI tutor calibrated to the YKI levels that tells you exactly where your speaking stands. It’s the tool I want every candidate to have.

Does Sano replace the YKI exam?

No. Sano is a YKI preparation tool. The YKI test itself is administered by Finnish municipalities and registered through the Finnish National Agency for Education (oph.fi). Sano gives you realistic speaking practice every day between now and your test date.

What level am I at?

You set your starting level during onboarding (A1.1 to C2 for CEFR, 1 to 6 for YKI) and Sano calibrates every speaking task to it. As you practise, Sano tracks your performance and levels you up automatically when you're consistently doing well — no manual adjustment needed.

What changed on 8 January 2026?

Since 8 January 2026, the qualifying stay for Finnish permanent residence has extended from 4 to 6 years, with a new requirement to demonstrate language skills. YKI 3 remains the citizenship standard. See migri.fi for the official notice.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. The Free plan never charges you. The Regular plan comes with a 2-week free trial, so you can cancel before it ends and pay nothing. You can cancel any paid subscription any time from Settings, and access continues to the end of the paid period.

Is Sano endorsed by Migri or OPH?

No. Sano is not officially affiliated with Migri or the Finnish National Agency for Education. We cite oph.fi's published YKI rubric and structure our practice tasks against it.

How long does it take to reach YKI 3 from A2?

There's no fixed timeline — it depends on your starting level and how often you practise. Sano tracks your progress automatically: as your speaking improves, you level up, so you always have a clear signal of how close you are to YKI 3.

Will Sano help my pronunciation?

Yes. Voice mode captures your speech and grades it phoneme by phoneme against the YKI pronunciation rubric, showing you exactly which sounds need work.

Which devices does Sano work on?

Sano runs on iPhone (iOS) and the web today, with Android coming soon. You can switch between devices and your progress syncs automatically.

Does Sano work for puhekieli (spoken Finnish)?

Yes. Sano practices both puhekieli (everyday spoken Finnish) and kirjakieli (the standard form). YKI 3 speaking accepts puhekieli for informal scenarios.

I speak Russian/Ukrainian/Estonian as my native language. Will Sano help me?

Yes. Sano calibrates to your target language (Finnish) and is independent of your native language, so you can practise and get feedback either way. The app interface is currently available in 14 languages.
